A day at Lichen

A day, from the door to pickup

Morning programs go home at noon. The school day carries on with lunch, quiet time and an afternoon in the studio.

  1. Step 1: 8:30 Arrival and meeting

An adult greets each child at the door. The group gathers to say what they would like to work on and what they are wondering about.

  2. Step 2: 9:00 Projects

Children work in the studio, the main room and the yard, each place with a teacher beside them. The same project can carry on for several days.

  3. Step 3: 10:15 Snack and the yard

Snack is at a table with a teacher, then outdoors for as long as the weather allows.

  4. Step 4: 12:00 Lunch

Morning children go home. School-day children eat lunch from home with a teacher at the table.

  5. Step 5: 12:45 Quiet time and stories

Rest on a cushion or look at books in the reading nook. Children who do not rest are welcome to draw quietly.

  6. Step 6: 1:30 Afternoon studio and pickup

A longer stretch in the studio, a last look at the panels and pickup at the door at 2:30.

Outdoors

The yard and the walk to the water

On most mornings the children and two teachers walk the trail at the edge of the yard. They bring back what they find to the studio, and it often turns into the next day's project.
